“The studio has been an inspiration, it transformed me from a brush dauber into a painter and renewed my interest in art.
Thanks for the starlit voyage. ”
“I have been a student of Alain’s for the past 30 years (!) and look forward to painting in his studio every Tuesday morning. Alain is a gifted teacher who is able to help any student in any medium at any level to become more proficient in his/her medium of choice. His knowledge of art history seems endless so he is able to pluck out one of his many art books to illustrate what a student is trying to accomplish. The learning never ceases in his studio which is fun.”
“Mr. Gavin was for many years the absolute favorite teacher for the Continuing Studies at SAIC Sunday painting studios, with many inventive and inspirational strategies for approaching painting, using both watercolor and oils and more media, whether by working in the manner of a famous artist, or breaking new abstract ground, or working in an observational way.”
“ “It is better to paint a good unfinished picture than a poor completed one.… One stroke can be a completed work of art.”

Alain Gavin Studio offers adult 2D learners at all levels an exceptional opportunity to advance their practice in a small-group setting. My own efforts in contemporary watercolor gained more direction after intensive classes in the techniques, palette, and practice of such modern masters as Bonnard, Cezanne, Gauguin, and those they influenced (Paula Rego, Peter Doig). I often return to these artists when I need a fresh way to think about organizing the sheet of paper. Optional readings—Diebenkorn on Matisse, Munch’s diaries—provide additional fodder for coffee-break discussions. Along with the occasional pro-seminars on technical execution, the studio classes encourage students to develop their own relationship to paint while folding in historical knowledge of their chosen medium.”
“If I had to be on a desert island with just one art teacher it would be Alain Gavin! Alain is a dedicated, serious teacher who cares about his students and the subject of art. He can explain a painting in such detail and with such genuine appreciation that one can almost feel transported into the painting. He is a superlative instructor who brings out the “inner artist” in his students. Alain is a humble man, patient and a joy to work with. I would highly recommend him as an instructor. ”
“Alain Gavin Studio helps students develop their own relationship to paint while folding in historical knowledge of their chosen medium.”
